Creative Community Garden at Beacon
BEACON | Philadelphia
The Beacon Landscape Master Plan presents a Creative Community Garden to support the programming led by Beacon to engage its Kensington neighbors, visiting seminarians, and church community. Locus Partners re-conceived the churchyard in the West Kensington neighborhood of North Philadelphia as a thriving garden, to help Beacon grow “a neighborhood faith community...that invites people of all ages to grow together through arts, learning, and faith.”
A preferred scheme was developed from programming and layout alternatives, then described through illustrative, annotated renderings. We recommended sacred tree and plant species to maximize seasonal expression and bring delight to garden visitors. Recommended materials and furnishings are simple, appropriately scaled, and comfortable. The final Beacon landscape is envisioned as a source of creative energy. It accommodates the large scale play of children, opportunities for more intimate gathering, and active learning through its community garden plots. Realization and stewardship of the Garden will build community as it grows.
Locus Partners prepared an estimate of probable costs and recommended phased implementation to guide fiscal planning and implementation of landscape improvements. A bound illustrative and narrative report summarizes the design process, existing conditions, and recommended landscape improvements to include in grant writing efforts.
